Biochemistry
Biochemists study the chemistry of living organisms to explain how they work at the molecular level. Biochemists also study the elements, compounds and chemical reactions controlled by enzymes.
Biology
Biologists study of life in all its forms. For example, you could study the shifts in plant and animal communities resulting from climate change, or work in a variety of areas from scientific research to technical work in the food and drinks industry.
Chemistry
Chemists focus on the physical and chemical properties, composition and structure of living and non-living materials and how we use and modify them for safe and beneficial use in our modern lives.
Computer Science
This involves the design and architecture of computers, the development of programs and effective construction of systems. As a computer scientist you could work as a games programmer, graphics designer, or develop software for the Internet and mobile phones.
Food Science
Food scientists focus on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of food along the production chain from farm to plate. As a food scientist you could find new ways to improve food production and processing systems.
Microbiology
Microbiology is concerned with the interactions between micro-organisms and their hosts, and studies life forms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. As a microbiologist you could develop more effective chemotherapy or immunisation methods.
Pharmacy
Research pharmacists discover and advise on the properties of new drugs, and ensure that patients get the maximum benefits from medicine with minimum side effects. Retail pharmacists dispense medicine to patients.
Physics
Physicists study how the universe works, through the experimental and theoretical study of matter and energy and their interactions. In this career you could design and build hardware for space shuttles, or research the origins of the universe.
