New course prepares science students for work

Four Irish universities have launched a new PhD programme designed to help science students translate their academic expertise into practical employer-focused skills.

The Clinical Translational and Research Scholars Programme (CTRSP) was developed by Molecular Medicine Ireland (MMI), TCD, UCC, UCD and NUI Galway and has received significant input from the Irish Medicines Board and research companies such as Amgen and Pfizer.

The course is tailored to equip science students with the range of practical skills that are needed in the medical research industry and to help them translate their knowledge into commercial solutions.

In all, 20 graduates – five from each university – have enrolled in the four-year course. The programme enables students to visit each of the participating universities in their first year and provides them with work placements in academic and industry-based research groups.
