Microelectronics industry could create 2,000 jobs

It’s Microelectronics Week in Ireland and MIDAS – the Microelectronic Industry and Design Association of Ireland – estimates that the sector could provide 2,000 new jobs in the next five years.

Microelectronics involves the design and production of tiny electronic components such as processor chips and semiconductors. About 8,000 people are already employed in the industry in Ireland and more than a quarter of these jobs are in research and development.

MIDAS’s prediction has come just as US firm ON Seminconductor announced plans to inject a further €13 million in its R&D facility in Limerick, an investment that is expected to generate 69 new jobs.
